Changing Perspectives of Cryptozoology Part 5: Stan Gordon

For years, I have been fascinated in the evolution of cryptozoological thought. There are clear fractures happening in the field, but I don't really see a ton of discussion about it in public. Yet, I have had plenty of personal conversations with a variety of researchers about the changes. So, I decided it would be valuable to the field to ask a variety of researchers, all with different approaches and expertise, the same five questions about the field today. Hopefully, the differences in answers will be valuable information on the diversity of thought in the field.

For my last interview, I talked to my friend Brian Parsons, you can read that here. For this one, I spoke to the one and only Stan Gordon.

Stan Gordan is Pennsylvania's premier researcher into the unusual and unexplained. Having been involved in the field for over 60 years, Stan has amassed an incredible number of cases. He has written three books on the unexplained and produced a documentary about the Kecksburg UFO Crash, on which he is the lead authority. He can be found at his website www.stangordon.info

1. What is cryptozoology as you see it?

Stan: My long journey into this interesting and controversial field of research began just as the term cryptozoology was being introduced to the public. My interest in researching Bigfoot and cryptids, as well as other anomalies, began when I was 10 years old in 1959. I was a kid interested in science and electronics who had heard radio discussions about people claiming to have seen strange creatures, and I was curious to learn if these accounts were true.

It was my understanding back in those days that cryptozoology was basically a quest to investigate, document, and search for animals that were not known. Many of the mystery animals reported from land and sea worldwide are likely specimens that have never been catalogued and confirmed by the  scientific community. Years later, researchers from various backgrounds, including some of those who have been trained in the science fields, continue to pursue the ongoing strange reports of creatures that have not been scientifically confirmed.

2. Where do you think cryptozoology is headed in the next few years?

Stan: My answer to this question is based on discussions that I have had with others who are involved in this field. In speaking with other researchers in the field, they are more open minded and willing to at least listen to witnesses and investigate cases where some high strangeness details are associated with a Bigfoot or other cryptid encounter.

There is a growing body of data being gathered by researchers throughout the country and around the world that indicates that some of these mystery beasts act much stranger than normal flesh and blood creatures. In the last few years, many other investigators have now come forward and are discussing some of the same strange details associated with Bigfoot reports that I was writing about in the 1970s. I think we will be hearing more discussions, for example, of strange luminous balls of light being observed in association with Bigfoot encounters or observed in areas that have a long history of Bigfoot sightings.

With the introduction of the internet, reports of mysterious creature sightings from around the world  are easily accessible. Many of the experienced cryptozoologists of past years are no longer with us. I feel that in the future, there will be new teams of younger researchers that are now getting involved to seek out answers to the continuous reports of Bigfoot, Thunderbirds, water monsters, and more.

3. Who do you think (living or deceased) has had the biggest impact on the state of cryptozoology in today's world?

Stan: I would have to say that it was the late Ivan Sanderson that influenced myself and others to use a scientific approach to investigating such reports. I was also very interested in the findings of the late John Keel. My investigations of some Pennsylvania strange creature encounters of the late 1960s and early 1970s, turned up some similar details as to what Keel had uncovered during his research and investigations into the Mothman mystery and other strange cases. There are some great researchers out there, such as researcher and author Nick Redfern, who are willing to speak out about the unusual cryptid cases that are taking place that defy easy explanations.

4. What, if any, have been cryptozoology's biggest contributions to modern science?

Stan: I think that this field has raised the awareness that there may well be undiscovered creatures large and small that need to be confirmed and catalogued for science. It might also encourage those in the science field to take a more serious approach to look into reports of mysterious creatures.

5. Why do you think that paranormal and ufological subjects have been gaining traction within the field of cryptozoology?

Stan: I feel that the reason that these topics are gaining traction is that more and more cases are surfacing where these two subjects seem to interact, and some UFO and Bigfoot researchers are becoming more open minded and are coming across cases similar to what I have been finding for years. There are similarities and likely some connection with various anomalies associated within the UFO, cryptid and the paranormal field.

For decades, many of those involved in the UFO and Bigfoot research community refused to take a serious look into any correlation between the two phenomena. Beginning in 1970 and continuing for many years, I led teams of research specialists including scientists and engineers to investigate UFO, Bigfoot, and cryptid incidents that were reported in Pennsylvania. I began to conduct in-the-field investigations of these cases in 1965 and realized as my investigations increased over the years, that many Bigfoot sightings, just as with UFOs, could be explained as various types of misidentifications.

There were, however, many very detailed Bigfoot encounters that could not be easily dismissed. Early on, I was of the opinion that Bigfoot was an unknown animal. I was not expecting to be exposed to the strange series of Bigfoot cases that took place during the 1970s. That is when we began documenting numerous Bigfoot encounters that had high strangeness details, and cases when Bigfoot and UFOs were seen together. Those well documented cases changed my perception of what was taking place.

There were cases where we observed trails of large footprints with long strides in various ground conditions including heavy snow that just ended abruptly without an explanation. Reports from various witnesses of seeing in daylight a Bigfoot suddenly just vanish and then reappear at another nearby location and a incident with a woman who fired at a Bigfoot with her shotgun only a few feet in front of her. It vanished in a bright flash of light.

While I am not suggesting that we are dealing with visitors from another planet, more information  has been surfacing that suggests that we are dealing with a phenomena that has a physical and non-physical component to it. I learned from communicating with some very active Bigfoot researchers in the 1970’s that they had also received similar strange incidents, but they didn’t want to discuss or publish their findings for fear of being ridiculed by fellow investigators. These types of incidents appear to be increasing and are now being discussed seriously on radio and podcast shows. Some well researched books have been published in recent years that are covering these same topics.

6. What is the current focus of your research?

Stan: One focus of my current research are the sightings of black panthers in the Keystone state. Some of these out of place animal reports occur in the daylight and at close range. Witnesses ,in past years and as recently as 2020, described seeing an animal that looked like what they saw in a zoo. This melanistic version of a jaguar or leopard has been reported for years in areas where they should not exist. Interestingly, such reports have also occurred at locations where Bigfoot sightings were also taking place or in areas that have a history of other mysterious events.

I am investigating some recent sightings of Thunderbirds as well. I continue to receive reports of other even stranger cryptid as well.

I am also looking into cases here in Pennsylvania where it appears that a particular geographical location or private property seems to be the focus of repeated paranormal events along with UFO and various types of cryptid activity. Some of these locations have had a long history of strange incidents. Some of the events that have taken place are similar to what have been reported at the Skinwalker ranch in Utah.

One more widespread area that is very active is the Chestnut Ridge that spreads through sections of Westmoreland, Fayette, and Indiana counties in Pennsylvania and continues to a few miles outside of Morgantown, West Virginia. Strange incidents are reported yearly but the areas along sections of Westmoreland and Fayette counties are quite active.

There continue to be reports of small spheres of light or other unusual luminous objects being reported in active Bigfoot locations and some have actually been seen and associated with a Bigfoot encounter.

I am also obtaining details from eyewitnesses who are describing various strange happenings during their encounters with Bigfoot and other cryptids. In some cases, the cryptids appear startled when they realize they can be seen by the human observers.

Reports of  odd electromagnetic fields (EMF) disturbances associated with Bigfoot encounters have been reported over the years. There have been cases of UFOs moving low over cars and the vehicle lost power until the object moved away. Although rare, there have been incidents also reported where a Bigfoot walked near a car, and when it did, the vehicle lost power until the creature moved out of the area. Some of these cases occurred in Pennsylvania. I am continuing to research these types of cases as well.

The more I know about the phenomena the stranger it is. I said years ago, “The phenomena is so strange it protects itself.”

Pennsylvania Bigfoot Camping Adventure - An Intense Event... In Tents

As I expressed last week, I love conferences. This year I am attending upwards of 13 different events and those that are later this year have some fierce competition as to my favorite event of the year. I couldn't have had a better time at the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Camping Adventure.

When I arrived at Benner's Meadow Run Campgrounds Friday it was sprinkling slightly. I helped set up my tent and then headed down to the pavilion where the event was being held. I saw that the infamous Legend of Boggy Creek was showing (and I had never gotten to view the movie before) so I grabbed my chair and watched it with my father. I was quite entertained by the movie and can see why so many cryptozoologists find it so significant in their upbring as a researcher. After that, I crawled into my warm (and dry) sleeping bag and went to sleep.

Saturday arrived with the thunder of raindrops pounding on my tent's roof. Aw Crap, I thought to myself as I got dressed and looked at the time: 6 a.m. Double Crap, the event didn't start until 10:30. I had to wait four hours before I could really begin my Bigfoot adventure. So, I did what any good cryptozoologist would do with four hours of free time on his hands in the middle of a supposed Bigfoot-infested camp grounds: I sat in the car with the heat on and read books.

Finally 9:30 rolled around and I glanced outside and saw Stan Gordon arriving. I jumped out of the car (rain coming down in buckets) and helped Stan and his wife, Deb, set up their table and canopy, all while getting wet and muddy in the process. After that most of the other vendors had arrived and the talks were about to start so I braved the elements for the short walk down to the pavilion to check out everything.

The rest of the day was pretty standard: talks went on all day and for the most part I wandered around the vendors catching up with friends and making new acquaintances. I got to meet Steve Kulls (The Sasquatch Detective), Jay Bachochin (of the WPI Hunts the Truth), Kenny Biddle (from Geeks and Ghosts), the lovely hosts of One Bizarre Podcast, Lon Strickler (Phantoms and Monsters), and John Sabol (The Ghost Excavator). I also got to catch up with some good friends of mine: David Weatherly and Dave Spinks (Society of the Supernatural), Ronald Murphy (The Crypto-Guru), Brian D. Parsons (Paranormal News Insider), Stan Gordon, and of course the one and only Eric Altman.

Later that night there was an auction where I got a couple New England Legends DVDs, which is a program that Jeff Belanger does. I got to meet Jeff last week at the Kent Paranormal Weekend and he is an awesome guy. After that we ended up staying at a hotel because the relentless rain caused our tent to leak. I only stayed for half of Sunday's events because I needed to get home. It operated the same as Saturday's except with different speakers.

I have to give Eric an enormous thank you and shout out because without him this event wouldn't have happened. I had such a wonderful time, despite the unendting torrential downpour. Eric said that this year will be the last of the event's for a while. He needs a break from the unending stress that putting together such an event creates. I respect that and respect him for doing such an awesome job at this event. When the PA Bigfoot Camping Adventure returns, though, I am getting tickets immeditately. I honestly can't explain how great I thought this event was. Thank you, Eric, for putting together the event and I look forward to the next one whenever it happens!

Wildmen, Dinosaurs, and Legend Tripping: My Six Favorite Books from This Year

This year has had some fantastic new releases from sone of the best crypto-authors out there. Here is a roundup review of my six favorite books from this year in no particular order.

On Wildman: Tracking Bigfoot Through History by Ronald L. Murphy Jr.

As I stated in my previous review of On Wildman, Ron's excellent study of Bigfoot throughout history is a treat for anyone interested in Bigfoot, mythology, or cryptozoology in general.

A Menagerie of Mysterious Beasts: Encounters with Cryptid Creatures by Ken Gerhard

Ken Gerhard's takes his readers on a global adventure in his third solo book; A Menagerie of Mysterious Beasts. Ken covers nearly every kind of creature you could imagine; Ape-Men; Dogmen; black panthers; sea serpents; Thunderbirds; and even giant spiders. Menagerie is written in Ken's no-nonsense tone but doesn't lack any bit of excitement or strangeness.

I especially liked that Ken strayed away from the well known and popular cases and creatures. He examines some of the weirdest stuff you will ever find in a cryptid book... and that's saying something.

Beyond the Seventh Gate: Exploring Toad Road, the Seven Gates of Hell, and Other Strangeness in York, Lancaster, and Adams Counties by Timothy Renner

When Timothy Renner first heard "don't look behind you on Toad Road," instead of just shrugging off the strange superstition, he questioned why. From there, he went through a long and weird journey not only on Toad Road but on some others as well. Are there really Seven Gates of Hell in York county? What is an Albatwitch? And, why shouldn't you look behind you on Toad Road? Find out in Timothy's excellent investigation into the truth behind the legends.

This book is an excellent example of cryptid/unexplained investigation done right. Timothy looks into any and all possibilities into the handful of urban legends and folklore that exist within York, Adams, and Lancaster Counties. I read this book in one sitting, it was THAT good.

Legend Tripping: The Ultimate Adventure by Robert C. Robinson

Legend tripping: (Noun) to go or participate on a quest or adventure for something which has defined a mystery or legend and not verified or explained by science. In his highly detailed guide into how to begin legend tripping, Robert Robinson goes above and beyond that definition. He gives brief explanations of popular legends, how to perform a trip, and how to have fun doing it. He examines all kinds of legend trips including cryptid, paranormal, and UFO trips. Robert also tells stories about some legend trips he has been on.

This book is for both the novice and experienced in any kind of legend tripping field. The book is an entertaining read for anyone interested in the stranger side of the world.

Still in Search of Prehistoric Survivors: The Creatures that Time Forgot by Karl P. N. Shuker

In 1995, Karl Shuker released what many agree to be his greatest work; In Search of Prehistoric Survivors. The book soon went out of print and became a much-sought-after piece. Finally, after 21 years of waiting, Shuker has released an updated version of the book. Considering the fact that I loved the first one, it was a given that I would also love the revised edition.

One of the many things that made Shuker's work unique — besides it being the only book of its kind — is the careful examination that he goes through of each potential survivor. He also doesn't only look at extinct animals for possible explanations. Shuker presents a truly balanced piece of cryptozoological writing that deserves a place on everyone's shelf.

Nessie: Exploring the Supernatural Origins of the Loch Ness Monster by Nick Redfern

As I've stated before, Nick Redfern never ceases to disappoint me with his work; I love his Chupacabra Road Trip, Monster Book, and everything in between, but this book was special. From the moment it was announced, I knew I HAD to have it. When I finally did get it at the Mothman Festival, I stayed up all night reading in the hotel bathroom so I didn't wake my father. I've always been interested in the Loch Ness Monster but had never been convinced that there was anything actually there; this book changed that for me.

Nick goes through the extensive history of the Loch Ness Monster, looking at not only modern sightings and evidence but also ancient legends such as the kelpie or Nessie's encounter with a Saint. I loved this book and if you like lake monsters, you will too!

Favorite Websites

I wanted to write a quick post about some of my favorite paranormal, cryptozoology, or just plain weird websites. So, without further ado, here is a list of my top five favorite unexplained themed websites.

1. Phantoms and Monsters
Run by fellow blogger and researcher Lon Strickler, Phantoms and Monsters is probably one of the biggest paranormal blogs out there. Lon often posts multiple times everyday on subjects that cover every aspect of the weird. Great resource to keep around.

2. Unexplained Mysteries
Unexplained Mysteries is a new source, an encyclopedia, and a forum of the strange. Think of anything weird and it is likely somewhere on Unexplained Mysteries. It has a huge amount of forum members discussing everything from the latest Bigfoot sighting to the most recent SpaceX launch.

3. Stan Gordon's UFO Anomalies Zone
Stan Gordon is a veteran UFO and Bigfoot research, he has been working in the field for over 50 years. Stan is based in Pennsylvania, so most of the information on his website is about PA occurrences but all of them are fascinating and odd.

4. Nick Redfern's World of Whatever...
Nick Redfern is a dedicated UFO, cryptid, and Fortean researcher who is also a very prolific author of books and articles. Redfern updates his blog with new articles written by him on some very obscure and weird phenomena.

5. Tyler's Cryptozoo
Tyler is another kid who is beginning in the cryptozoology field. He has been doing it a little longer than I have. Tyler is a great writer and posts some very interesting blog entries. Definitely check his blog out.

Interview With Stan Gordon

Stan Gordon is a seasoned ufologist and cryptozoologist who has worked in the field since 1965. He has three books, The Silent Invasion: The Pennsylvania UFO-Bigfoot Casebook, Really Mysterious Pennsylvania, and Astonishing Encounters: Pennsylvania’s Unknown Creatures. He is widely considered to be the foremost authority on paranormal phenomena in Pennsylvania as well as the Kecksburg UFO crash. I met Stan over Labor Day weekend where he agreed to this interview, and again at the recent Mothman Festival, which I will be posting a summary and review of as my next post.

1. What originally inspired you to research the paranormal? How long have you been doing this?
>I was a curious youngster who had an interest in science and electronics at an early age.  By coincidence my birthday is around Halloween. In 1959, on my 10th birthday, my parents gave me an AM radio as a gift. That evening as I tuned across the radio dial, some radio shows were discussing strange events such as ghosts and flying saucers. I listened to the discussions, and while intrigued I was also skeptical of some of what I was hearing. I wanted to learn more and began many trips to the Greensburg library to read what books they had on these topics. I continued my interest and research making scrap books from news stories that appeared on these subjects.  I was 16 years old in December of 1965, when a major UFO incident occurred in a rural community called Kecksburg, about 12 miles away from where I lived.

That night as the news was breaking from around the Pittsburgh area of the UFO incident, I began to take down notes. The next day as the story appeared in local newspapers, I began to call people in the area where the incident occurred to try to obtain more details. This year will mark 50 years of my investigation into the case.

That UFO incident still remains unsolved. I have been out in the field conducting first hand investigations in the UFO phenomena and many other areas of what would be described as paranormal. In the nearly 56 years that I have been conducting this research, I have still never seen a UFO or crossed paths with Bigfoot. The thousands of witnesses I have interviewed and the physical evidence that I have seen has convinced me, however, that there remain many mysteries in this world for which we have no answers.

2. Of all the cases you have investigated, what is, in your opinion, the most significant and why?
>This is a tough question to answer as there are multitudes of UFO and Cryptid cases that I have investigated that are significant.  The case that stands out was an incident that occurred during the major UFO-Bigfoot wave of 1973. It is very involved and well documented, so I am just giving you a brief summary.  On the evening of October 25, 1973, I received a call from a state trooper from the Uniontown barracks in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He had returned from investigating a strange incident on a farm and felt that I should send a research team to that area immediately.

About 9 PM that evening, a number of local residents observed a barn sized red sphere hovering about 100 feet in sky and dropping towards the ground. Three people went up to the pasture to investigate. They were shocked to see about 250 feet away that the object was on the ground or hovering just above it. The object now looked to be a bright white dome shape about 100 feet or more in diameter. It illuminated the area and made a loud whining sound. About 75 feet away from the observers was a barbed wire fence. Along that fence were two huge hair covered creatures with very long arms walking in their direction.

As one man fired ammunition at the beasts with a 30.06 rifle, the object suddenly just vanished, and the creatures being hit with ammo just kept walking back towards the direction from which they came with no apparent effect. The state trooper who arrived within the hour to investigate, said the area where the object had been was glowing and the farm animals would not go near it. When my team arrived during the early morning hours to investigate, some strange events took place in that area. I explain the entire case in detail in my “Silent Invasion” book. It was the case that clearly indicated that the Bigfoot and UFO phenomena is much more complex than any of us were aware of.

3. Are your files and research  concentrated simply to Pennsylvania, or have they branched out further?
>While I am interested in similar cases from surrounding states and what takes place elsewhere, my focus has been to document what has been taking place in Pennsylvania. The Keystone state has a long history of mysterious happenings, and these strange encounters continue to take place each year. This year has been very active with UFO, cryptid and other anomalistic incidents.

4. Your second book, The Silent Invasion: The Pennsylvania UFO-Bigfoot Casebook, focuses on a wave of sightings during the seventies where Bigfoot and UFO sightings seemed to be connected, do you have any theories as to what the connection might be based on the various encounters? Do you feel that all Bigfoot sightings are connected to UFOs?
>The “Silent Invasion” book details the many mysterious events that took place from 1973 into 1974 across Pennsylvania. I began investigating Bigfoot encounters in the late 1960s. I had always felt that the initial information we had indicated that these creatures seemed to be some type of unknown animal. During the wave of the early 1970s, residents were calling the police and my research team reporting many very strange events. Some patterns of the phenomena began to emerge from widespread locations.

Observers would report a UFO sighting in a certain area and within a short time, a Bigfoot encounter would take place there as well. Sometimes it would be the reverse, with a Bigfoot sighting taking place, then a UFO encounter would occur. Then there were cases where a UFO and Bigfoot were seen together at the same time and location.

Most UFO sightings historically reported have no association with a Bigfoot encounter. And most Bigfoot incidents aren’t associated with UFO activity. Such cases of Bigfoot with UFOs  have been reported not just from Pennsylvania, but from throughout the country and other parts of the world. As I have mentioned many times in my writings, I don’t have the answers if there is a direct connection between the two phenomena. The more you look into the UFO and cryptid fields, the more it is apparent that we are dealing with a very strange, and complex phenomena.

I am not suggesting that Bigfoot is an Alien life form and that it is an occupant of a spacecraft from another world. We don’t know for sure what UFOs really are. While many sightings are explainable, some remain unexplained. There are many theories for these objects including extraterrestrial spacecraft, time and interdimensional travelers, even unknown natural phenomena. I don’t have the answers, but I keep an open mind to all possibilities.

5. You seem to, in your books, focus on cryptozoology and ufology, what are your thoughts, if you have any, on some other paranormal subjects, such as ghosts, poltergeists, psychic abilities, fairies, or werewolves?
>During many years of research I had an interest in all types of anomalistic events including most of the topics you have mentioned.  In the late 1960s and early 1970s, I was involved with cases of alleged haunted houses and ghosts. I interviewed many people who claimed to have ESP experiences. I have looked into many types of strange creature and mysterious being encounters including claims of fairies and werewolves, and discussed in my new book, “Astonishing Encounters: Pennsylvania’s Unknown Creatures.”

6. Do you have any advice for anyone who may be starting within the subject of the unusual and unexplained?
>Don’t believe everything that you read and see on the internet. Keep an open mind when researching such cases, but be objective and look for sources that might explain what took place. Associate with trained research professionals such as scientists and engineers, and utilize their expertise when evaluating mysterious claims.

All three of Stan’s books are highly recommended. He can be found here

UFO-Bigfoot Connection

There seems to be two different types of Bigfoot researcher. The first, and most common, is the researcher who feels that the creature is a physical animal. The second, widely considered to be among the “fringe”, are those who feel that Bigfoot is something less physical, something potentially spectral or alien. This post is about the second group. Those who feel this way are definitely the minority, often ridiculed or ignored. They are often dismissed along with the data they present.

Probably the best known researcher into this idea is Stan Gordon. I actually interviewed Stan earlier this year, the interview is here, on my blog. Stan has been researching the unusual and paranormal for over 50 years. One of the best pieces of evidence that supports Stan’s case is his documentation of the Bigfoot-UFO Pennsylvania Wave of 1973 and 1974.

The wave, like every mass of sightings, started slowly with some “normal” sightings, and the slowly build up into containing some of the most unusual encounters ever documented. You can find a complete documentation of the story in Stan’s book Silent Invasion: The Pennsylvania UFO-Bigfoot Casebook. I won’t go over the entire story of the wave but I will briefly describe my favorite encounter.

The encounter took place on October 25, 1973 near Uniontown, PA. Around 9 at night, the witness and his wife saw a very large, red, glowing sphere in the sky, as they were driving home. When they reached their house, they found their family members watching the light. The witness decided to go to a neighbors to try and get a better look. He and two neighbors investigated further by heading to where the object had landed. The object was found in the middle of a field, now green and dome-shaped. As the three men are looking at the dome, two large, hairy ape-like figures are seen walking along the field’s fence. The beings then climb over the fence and start heading toward the dome. The witnesses start to fire with the guns they brought with them, but the creatures appeared unharmed. As soon and the gunfire began the dome disappears before their eyes. The beings began to walk away the other way. Later, the witnesses claimed they were sure that they hit the creatures with the gunfire.

The report above is only one of hundreds of related incidents. What do you guys think? Do you think that there might be a connection? Or is this all just a bunch of baloney? Tell me in the comments.

Bigfoot Touches Witness's Vehicle in Fayette, Pennsylvania

Fayette County, Pennsylvania is a hot spot of the weird. Everything from strange cats, to Bigfoot, to UFOs are frequently seen there. Recently, an interesting new report has emerged from the area.
Four days ago an anonymous witness contacted Jim Brown, a researcher of the unexplained, about an encounter with two unusual, large creatures.
The encounter was five days ago and has garnered some attention for an interesting aspect of the report, one of the creatures actually touched the witness's vehicle.
The full report is on Pennsylvania based researcher Stan Gordon's website. You can find it here.

This is not the only time a Bigfoot creature has physically interacted with the vehicle of the witness in Pennsylvania.
Stan Gordon discusses an unusual encounter in his first book, Really Mysterious Pennsylvania where the witness's car actually was damaged by a tall, white colored, ape-like creature.
The book is highly recommended, you can buy it here.
